About Lon Ligon

Lon has been calling the Grand Squares club for 32 years in the same hall! That is a lot of accomplishment and dedication.

Lon and Peggy Ligon started square dancing in 1970 while overseas in Panama. Lon started square dance calling in 1971 when the current club caller was transferred back to the United States.

Since beginning calling, Lon has called not only overseas, but in many of the states. He was on the Staff of the Dogwood Festival at Fontana, North Carolina. He is currently on the staff for the Smokey Mountain Festival in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, the Watermelon Festival in Chiefland, Florida, and Peanut Festival in Williston, Florida.

Lon and Peggy are the Past Officers of the Florida Callers Association, Gateway Callers Association, and are the past Presidents of the Rural Callers Association.

Lon is the club caller for the Grand Squares in Gainesville, Florida and has called there for the past 32 years.

In addition to his local clubs, Lon travels throughout Florida and the adjoining states calling for various clubs. Lon has also called each year at the Florida State Convention and has also called at several National Conventions. He has been a member of Callerlab since 1985. He is currently a “Silver” badge caller in the Florida Callers Association for calling consecutively for the past 32 years.

Along with his square dance calling, Lon plays with a country western/bluegrass band and has recorded six country/western CD’s in his home studio.

Planning a party or special event?

If you want your guests to have the time of their lives...and maybe to get a little better acquainted. I can help.

Whether you call it a square dance, a barn dance, or a hoedown, I've made it so easy that your guests can start square dancing in 60 seconds.

No one needs any special skills, or any knowledge of or experience with other types of dance. If you can walk, you can square dance, and I’ll prove it to you in seconds.

Using a handful of terms (like Circle, Alamande left, Do-si-do, and Promenade), I’ll take you and your friends from a standing start to the heights of square dance success. And of course, no hoedown would be complete without the Virginia Reel or some Contra dancing.

All you have to do is take that first step onto the dance floor. Within seconds, I’ll have you and your guests moving, first in time with my voice, then with the music. In less than a minute, you’ll feel like you’re really dancing – because you are!

And here are some of the types of events I’ve called at:
  • Weddings – including pre- and post-wedding parties
  • Anniversaries, birthdays, reunions, other family parties
  • School/PTA parties
  • Colleges and high schools
  • College clubs, fraternities and reunions
  • Scouting events – including Girl Scout father-daughter dances
  • Church, temple, lodge, country club, sports and social club parties
  • Conventions, conferences, business meetings
  • Fundraisers
  • Barbecues, clambakes, hayrides
  • Town days, block parties, dancing in the park
  • Historical reenactments
  • Festivals, fairs
  • Company picnics, employee/volunteer/staff parties
