Who we are.We are a group of individuals who enjoy getting out of the house and turning off the TV and enjoying the socializing, fun and friendship of square dancing together.
It's FUN, HEALTHY and relieves the STRESS in our lives. And we get to meet some of our wonderful neighbors and make some new friends in the community.

How can I join in the fun? It's really very simple. The club holds square dance classes each year (Mondays from 7 to 9:30 pm). Those that wish to join us please call (352) 377-1828 and we'll give you all the information that you would like. The classes are easy and loads of fun. Regular dances are Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. Workshops from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Carpenters Union Hall, 1910 NW 53rd Avenue in Gainesville, Florida! We hope that you will join us soon.

At the Florida State Square and Round Dance Convention (May, 2008), The Florida Federation of Square Dancers awarded their highest honor, the Extra Mile Award to Lon and Peggy Ligon.  See the main page for details.

Tuesdays, starting at 6:00 p.m. there is a class and plus workshop followed by a regular dance at 7:30.

ADVANCED SQUARE DANCE CLASS Thursdays at the Carpenters Union Hall, 1910 NW 53rd Ave., Gainesville, FL from 7 to 9 p.m. Bobby Keefe is the caller/instructor.

Fourth Annual All-Star Peachtree Promenade Square & Round Dance Weekend July 24th - 26th, 2008 with Ken Bower (of Palm Desert, CA), Gary Shoemake (of Sevierville, TN), Jerry Biggerstaff (of marion, NC), Darryl McMillian (of Decatur, AL), Steve Kopman (of Knoxville, TN). Rounds with Bob & Sandy Hange (of Conyers, GA) at the Commerce, Georgia - Civic Center.

Grand Squares Ichetucknee State Park Blue Bottom Party, Saturday August 9th. We'll have the hot dogs, chili and soda - you bring side dishes and anything else you care to drink. If you want a raft you have to pre-register with Peggy so that the rafts can be ordered. There will be special certificates issued to river riders. Everyone is welcome. We'll be at the park at 8:00 am and the first folks to go down river start around 0830. There is a charge to enter the park.

Banner Raid Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at the Grand Squares club dance. A club from the Ocala area is going to raid our club and steal our banner. Let's make the turnout of club members a strong show. Causual dress. Finger foods welcomed.

CLUB VACATION. There will be NO dances or workshops on Tuesday, August 19, or Tuesday, August 26 or Tuesday, September 2, 2008. The club, and a number of the members will be taking a vacation including the Labor Day holiday.
Be sure to join us on our first dance of the fall season, Tuesday, September 9. There will a lot of catching up to do as well as plans for a new class and upcoming activities.

NFSARDA Fall Festival "Aloha" November 21 - 22, 2008, Guest Caller Tim Crawford of Canada and Guest Cuers Kit and Sandy Brown of NC. The festival will be located at Christ The King Catholic Church, 742 Arlington Road, Jacksonville, FL. Full weekend tickets are $12 per person in advance or $15 per night at the door. Our History: The Grand Squares were formed by Lon & Peggy Ligon on June 22, 1975 at the Carpenters Union Hall [ 1910 NW 53rd Avenue in Gainesville, Florida ]  and we have been dancing there every Tuesday evening since 1975 (7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.). The club caller is Lon Ligon, who has been actively calling since 1971. Peggy Ligon , his wife, maintains and oversees the club activities and keeps all the booking, calling and club information. They are the past presidents of the Florida Callers Association and past officers of the Rural Callers Association and The Gateway Callers Association. They are current members of Callerlab.


Our Wonderful Dancers: Every club needs helpers, angels, and dancers. Our club certainly has some very dedicated people who are always there to participate and help whenever you need them. They are an asset to our club and to the WONDERFUL WORLD OF SQUARE DANCING.
